Our History by Year
2007
In 2007, five community members gathered to discuss improving hospice palliative care services in Olds and nearby areas. They all had personal experiences with loved ones at the end of life, which motivated their quest. Seeking guidance from Dr. Eric Wasylenko, an Alberta palliative care physician, and visiting hospices in Okotoks, Calgary, and Red Deer, they gained valuable insights and inspiration. With knowledge, compassion, and a shared vision, this group embarked on a mission to enhance end-of-life support in our community.
2009
In spring 2009, the group connected with Dr. Scott Odie at Red Deer College. Together, they crafted a comprehensive survey to gather insights from Bowden, Carstairs, Cremona, Didsbury, Olds, Sundre, and Mountain View County residents. They also engaged local healthcare professionals to ensure diverse perspectives.
Survey results and professional support drove their determination, overcoming obstacles without closed doors. With community voices and healthcare backing, they relentlessly pursued better hospice palliative care, showcasing resilience and unwavering commitment.
2010
In January 2010, the Olds & District Hospice Society (O&DHS) received official registration approval. An interim board quickly began work, focusing on committee terms and essential policies.
By October 2010, significant progress was made, highlighted by the inaugural General Meeting where the first board members were elected. This crucial step established a dedicated team to guide the society's mission.
Registration approval and board formation laid a strong foundation for O&DHS, initiating a collective effort to offer compassionate community care and setting the stage for transformative work in the years ahead.
2011
In April 2011, the Olds & District Hospice Society attained charitable status, cementing its commitment to the mission and enabling further community growth and support.
Charitable status opened doors for donor engagement, funding, and expanding services, enhancing the society's capacity to assist those requiring hospice care and support.
This milestone affirmed the society's dedication to making a meaningful impact on individuals and families navigating end-of-life journeys.
2012
In September 2012, a crucial milestone was reached by the Olds & District Hospice Society when they employed a Services Coordinator, thanks to financial support from Alberta Government's Community Initiatives Program.
The Services Coordinator's primary goal is to facilitate access to palliative care services, coordinating efforts of O&DHS volunteers and building partnerships with district caregivers. By closely collaborating with clients, volunteers, and caregivers, the Services Coordinator ensures seamless and compassionate support for individuals and families.

2015
In January 2015, a major expansion happened with the addition of two dedicated hospice suites at Sunrise Encore (now Season's Encore) in Olds, providing a valuable choice for those facing end-of-life journeys.
These suites broaden the Olds & District Hospice Society's support, ensuring a comforting and compassionate environment for those needing end-of-life care. They offer a meaningful option for individuals seeking solace during their final stages.
Incorporating hospice suites at Season's Encore shows the society's ongoing commitment to expanding and enhancing community services, fulfilling its mission of providing comprehensive support and comfort during this profound time.
2019
In August 2019, the Olds & District Hospice Society hired an Executive Director, thanks to generous support from the Alberta Government's Community Initiatives Program. The Executive Director oversees society administration, programs, and strategic plans for effective operations.
In November 2019, Nav-Care joined their program offerings, enhancing holistic care for individuals and families during end-of-life journeys.
The society conducts up to two annual palliative care volunteer training sessions, along with three Nav-Care and two bereavement facilitators programs, training nearly 150 individuals to contribute their knowledge and compassion.
Recognizing community needs, an advisory committee explores constructing a standalone hospice building and expanding capacity effectively.
2022
In June 2022, the Olds & District Hospice Society hired a part-time Administrative Assistant, a vital addition to ensure smooth office operations.
With the Administrative Assistant's help, the society maintains an organized office, managing tasks and enhancing overall productivity.
This dedicated hire strengthens the society's commitment to providing top-notch community services, improving its ability to meet the evolving needs of individuals and families during end-of-life journeys.
2023
In January 2023, the Olds & District Hospice Society expanded by incorporating the Nu2u Thrift store, enhancing services and community reach.
In February 2023, they appointed their first Nu2u Supervisor, responsible for overseeing store operations and integrating it into the society's mission.
Now with four dedicated staff members, they collaborate on diverse initiatives, providing essential services to individuals and families.
Supported by 140 volunteers, these selfless individuals play a vital role in the society's success and program delivery.
Through strategic expansion and the dedication of staff and volunteers, the Olds & District Hospice Society continues to profoundly impact the community.
2024
In 2024 the Olds & District Hospice Society changed their name to the Mountain View Hospice Society to be more inclusive of the larger area we serve.
We also ran our first ever Golf classic, which was deemed a huge success and luckily the weather was beautiful for a early June tournament.
In 2024 we served over 150 families that utilized NavCare, Bereavement, and hospice support services.
Our Nu2u Community thrift continues to serve the community through sustainable practices of reduce, reuse and recycle. We are are to create a safe environment for volunteers and community members to connect and help raise funds for quality palliative care in Mountain View County.

At the heart of our organization are dedicated, trained volunteers who provide a range of compassionate supports that enhance quality of life and foster connection. Through our Client Services, we offer: hospice, bereavement, navigation care support

Through our Nu2U thrift store and inclusive community events, we foster meaningful connection, purpose, and belonging. Whether it’s finding treasures at the store, volunteering, or participating in local fundraisers, these initiatives bring people together, reduce isolation, and build a stronger, more compassionate community for all

Volunteers play a crucial role in our organization, contributing their time and skills in various areas such as providing companionship to clients, governance, communications, fund development, organization, and advocacy.
At the Olds & District Hospice Society, we are fortunate to have over 120 dedicated volunteers. As our society continues to grow and extend its reach, we are actively seeking additional volunteers to join our compassionate team, helping us make a positive difference in the lives of individuals in need.
We believe that everyone has unique talents and abilities that can be utilized to be part of our extraordinary and meaningful organization. Running a non-profit requires the collective efforts of many talented community members.
